Should Psychiatrists Prescribe Placebos for Depression?

The impact of placebos may affect clinical outcomes more than many psychiatrists originally thought. The authors of a recent study at Brigham and Women's Hospital suggest a placebo treatment represents a better strategy for future clinical outcomes. The study surveyed more than 120 psychiatrists and found "a discrepancy between empirical evidence and psychiatrists' beliefs on the impact of placebo effects on clinical outcomes."

A questionnaire to be filled out by depressed patients could identify if a certain medication will be likely to improve a particular patient's symptoms. This model may be able to help patients obtain better treatment options tailored to their individual needs. After filling out a few questions the patient could receive an immediate prediction.
